Hello, my name is Chica. I am a very pretty one year old JRT/Chihuahua blend girl. I weigh in at around 13 pounds. I was found as a stray in Kentucky and taken to a shelter where my foster mom rescued me. I am recovering from demodex mange but don't let that frighten you because I am not contagious to people or other dogs. I am currently being treated and am fed yummy nutritious food which is helping me bounce right back. I have a little fur missing on my paws from this but I am already getting better. On a positive note, I am doing pretty well with potty training. I don't like going outside right now in the snow but I am pee pee pad ... (Read More)trained. Hopefully when I am feeling better I will just get use to going potty outside but for now I am doing well with both. I get along great with my friend Jubalee (also available for adoption) and am usually good with other dogs too but I do get jealous and can get snippy with them at times. This is something my foster mom is working on with me. I am living with a few kitties but I do not mind them. I am always getting under my foster parent's feet so I may not be best for small children or the elderly. During the day I am gated in the kitchen but my crate door is always left open so I can roam around as I want to. Just be warned that I can jump over gates so I will need a home with a tall fenced in yard. I will sleep perfectly in my crate at night but I am also very good sleeping with my foster mom in her bed. I sleep through the night and in the morning do my business right away. I am extremely sweet and just want someone to love me. I get very attached so you will have to be okay with me giving you hugs and always being on or near you. I was a stray after all so I am catching up for lost time. Chica is already spayed, micro-chipped, and up-to-date on all her shots. She has been Heart Worm tested too. Chica is good to go, set, ready and waiting. Vhica's adoption fee is only $250 and she is worth every penny of it. What more can you ask for??? Chica is being fostered in Westerlo, NY. If you think you can give me a great home with lots of love and attention, please contact Heartbod@yahoo.com. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-03-01-00287Rusty and Jillian

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Fixed, Vaccinations Current, Seizures

[Read About Natural Seizure Care] Some things truly get better as they age, and Rusty and Jillian are the perfect example of this! This sweet married couple have seen each other through the good times and bad, sickness and health, and it is very important we keep them together so they can continue to support each other through everything. Rusty and Jillian were raised and owned by a woman who did not spay or neuter her pets, so they continued to breed. She fell on hard times and found herself with 8 dogs over the age of 7, with Rusty and Jillian being the eldest of the group, so most likely the parents or grandparents of the others. Their ... (Read More)owner lost the ability to care for them and they developed skin problems due to flea infestations. Jillian lost all of the hair on her chest, belly, and legs, and Rusty lost all of the hair on his back from his should down. Two years later, these resilient dogs have come so far! Rusty has grown all of his hair back into a beautiful, luscious coat, and Jillian has grown most of her crazy and adorable wiry hair back as well! They both have special medical needs. Rusty has dry eyes, but all that requires is a few eye drops every day! Jillian has occasional seizures and is on medication to help regulate them. She also has some food allergies that contributed to the hair loss in her previous home, but she is doing great on her current diet. These two could live with cats or other dogs and would do best with teenager or adults so they can live quiet and relaxed lives. If you want to give them a loving home, please call (914)-273-1674 or go online to www.adopt-a-dog.org. (Less)

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Puppy

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I Wish I Could Tell You The Whole Truth! Zip was born about January 10, 2014 and weighs about 15 lbs. He has a nice, friendly, disposition toward everyone he has met and he's good with other dogs. Zip is good on leash and fine in the car. Why is he here? Well, the story goes that we get an early morning call from a woman that she knows a man with a dog that he doesn't want anymore and he is going to toss him out the door and hope he goes away or someone takes him. She gives us the man's name and number and we call to offer to take the dog, he's happy and invites us to visit. When we arrive he says he only took the dog in, from this ... (Read More)woman and her boyfriend, because he thought they were abusing him. He only had Zip for a couple of weeks and he had gained significant weight and seemed much happier.. He didn't intend to keep the dog he just couldn't live with knowing he wasn't being treated well and he was glad that we were taking him so we could find him a real home where he would be loved and cared for. What a story! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-02-23-00643Roscoe (male)

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Careful, I May Out Smart You! Roscoe was born about November 6, 2008 and weighs about 26 lbs. He and his big brother are here because, well.... there just wasn't enough time anymore. Roscoe is, fine in a car, good with other dogs and children of all ages. He is good on leash and there is a subject for discussion! They told us he climbs fences as high as 5 feet, although he was not able to climb the 6' kennel fencing in the Dog House. However, this agile young man also digs under fences. So, he needs a home with a high, really secure fence at the bottom, or to be on leash for the rest of his life. They also said that he is ... (Read More)extremely intelligent and gets himself into trouble. If you are looking for the life of the party kind of dog that will keep you entertained and on your toes, this is the man for you! Update from foster home: Roscoe has been with us for a week now and he is adjusting very nicely. He is steadily improving on his potty training and I'm confident he will have the rules down any day now. Although it was a bit of an adjustment at first, he gets along famously now with his foster dog friends, which range in size from 10 pounds to 90 pounds. Roscoe has his moments of pure enthusiasm and his moments of pure sleepiness. When he is on, he's on! And when in nap mode, he's a sleeper. He is a very wiggly squirmy guy who moves quick, and even though we haven't had the opportunity to try, I bet he would be a great walking companion. Some other important facts about Roscoe are that he is very smart and he likes to climb. He uses his paws almost as hands and has gotten himself halfway up the island in our kitchen to get closer to the yummy smelly food on top of it. Also, he needs a very comfortable bed, but one that has a tough exterior, since he likes to tear them apart and pull all of the stuffing out. The most important thing to Roscoe at this point in his life is that he know that he is loved and cherished by his people. This little dog seems to know that he was discarded and he is always looking for your approval and your affection. Change is hard for him and he will need time to adjust to your home and his new environment, but once he does, he will be your total and complete best friend and will love you unconditionally. He will greet you with a smile morning, noon and night! (Less)

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Fillmore Flynn was born 12/12/2014 and may weigh in at 15 pounds when full grown. These pups are beautifully socialized and have been living in a foster home with both cats and dogs and do wonderfully with all humans. The puppies and their mom, our Marie Flynn were very lucky to have made it out of the rural Tennessee shelter they were living in. Marie had given birth just 1 week before we arrived and we could tell she was desperate to get her family to safety. We happily scooped her and her 7 babies up and off to New York they went! The puppies will be spayed/neutered on 2/5/15 and ready for adoption on 2/7/15.

I Am A LOVER! Jack was born about December 19, 2007 and weighs about 27 lbs. He is one of the nicest JRTs that we've met! He is said to be good with other dogs, cats and kids. He loves to go for walks on leash and he LOVES car rides!!! He is house broken and adorable. He is your typical jack as far as having a wonderful sense of humor and he has the ability to make you laugh. He came to us from another rescue that had new dogs coming in and there was no room for Jack any longer, we were a bit confused, but it's about the dog and we are glad he is here.

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Amy is a very shy but sweet 3 year old terrier mix. She is quite small at just under 20 pounds. Amy was a stray who was turned in to a shelter in South Carolina. Amy was VERY scared in the shelter and on top of that, she was heartworm positive. The shelter staff knew she had no chance of getting adopted with her being so frightened and needing an expensive heartworm treatment, so they reached out to us for help. We agreed to take Amy under our wing. The shelter treated her for heartworm and sent her up to us for her 4 week recovery period. Amy has made great progress since she has been here. She started off hiding in the crate or the bedroom ... (Read More)and refused to come out. Her foster mom let Amy take baby steps, and didn't push her too much. After several weeks of small successes, Amy started to trust again. She will now lay on the couch with her foster mom, and loves to be pet. She also will go outside on her own. She was afraid of the big bad world, and going outside was scary for her. She is still timid and will most likely always be a bit shy and cautious. It will take her time to trust the new people that come in to her life. We are confidant that with time and exposure to new things, Amy will continue to blossom. Amy's ideal home would be a retired or older couple/person, who is home most of the time. Amy would like a quiet, calm household. She is fine with cats, and a submissive calm dog should be ok too. Small kiddos may scare her a bit. Amy asks that her new family will give her time to adjust and learn she can trust you. She promises not to be too much trouble. She hopes her timidness doesn't deter you from applying for her. She is a great, loving dog, who deserves a chance at happiness. Her heartworms are all gone and she is fully recovered and ready to find her happy ending. Please consider this sweetheart for your family. You can fill out our online application at homesweethomerescue.org. THANK YOU! Amy is spayed, UTD on all vaccinations, dewormed, flea treated, and will come with a free vet visit voucher. Amy's adoption fee is $200. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-29-00684Lady (female)

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Lady was born about October 16, 2011 and weighs about 10 lbs. She is one incredibly gorgeous little girl. Every mill dog does best going into a home with another 'normal' dog. A woman that has befriended a group of millers in central New York has promised to see nothing, hear nothing, and say nothing as long as the millers hand dogs over to her once they are through with them instead of killing them. She then distributes the 'used' dogs to rescues and sends many here. This group was only marginal fearful of us, so not too bad. In this load the fur wasn't too bad compared to what we've seen, but the adult dogs had normal mill dog teeth ... (Read More)where you can't see any white at all and when you check the teeth your fingers smell like you've just put them inside a rotting carcass. They will be getting dentals, but a single dental doesn't undo the damage done for so many years and will need to be done on a rather regular basis until the teeth are all gone or the erosion ceases from your good care. We will be working on house training, but surely you will have work to do in this area and we have wonderful notes to help you. These are notes that have had the best success with mill dogs. So, if I've not deterred you by this, brutally honest, depressing description by now and you still feel that you want to help one of these dogs and experience the magical joy of watching one of them decide they can love a human and become a real dog or as real as they will ever become, go ahead and e mail and ask us to send you our 'Working will Mill Dog Notes' and we will be happy to do so. Adopting one of these dogs is not so much about you as it is about the dog, it is an amazingly unselfish thing to do. You will be rewarded in the long run, but it may take awhile. Special thanks to Sara Stegner Lehner for donating $50.00 to Joyful Rescues in order to give Lady a name...something she's never had until now! (Less)

Jack Russell Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Gideon weighs about 10 lbs. and was born November 11, 2012 and has already been shuffled around a bit. The breeder who originally had him didn't want to keep him so he was given to a lady who had adopted one of his siblings. Unfortunately, she could not keep Gideon because having 2 dogs was too much confusion for her child who has mental disabilities. So Gideon came here to Joyful Rescues. He is a cute little guy but can be nippy when he is afraid and he is more afraid of males than females. He needs a strong confident leader who will be willing to work with him and take him to training classes to help him work through his fear aggression. ... (Read More)He is good, on leash, and in the car and we are told he is house trained, but many of these little ones need some retraining when they leave. Gideon is doing fine with the other dogs. It is not recommended that he be in a household with young children. We believe and are hoping that once he finds his forever home which will be a lot calmer and finally have long term stability that he will adjust and be just fine. Gideon just needs that one special family that is willing and wanting to give him that loving stable home. Is it you? (Less)

Once again our dog population was low and we were able to make a trip south, to a high kill area, and managed to fit 37 dogs and one tiny Siamese kitten into the Yukon XL!!! Rarely is there much vet work done on the dogs we choose so we have the normal expenses of getting them ready for adoption on top of the shelter pull fees, gas, one night hotel stay and lots of coffee so a trip costs us about $800.00. However, this trip was sponsored by Regain Physical Therapy!!! They are located at 3819 Monroe Ave., Pittsford, NY and are a new business with a new facebook site and we'd love to have you facebook them, 'Like' them, and give them a ... (Read More)shout out of thanks! If you know any other businesses that might be willing to sponsor a southern rescue mission, please let us know. Not one dog complained about the long ride and all have settled in nicely. Many of them seemed to have understood, right away, that they were now safe in our Dog House with fresh blankets, lots of Science Diet food, automatic waterers and even toys! It gets a little confusing when getting files ready for so many, so if breed, size, age seems questionable with the photos shown, please let us know. We are doing the best we can to save as many as we can. We so appreciate your understanding and willingness to adopt a dog we know little about that would have been dead, within a few days, If they had not come here. We always test out of towners for heart worm. Ceelo Bradley was born about August 19, 2013 and weighs about 30 lbs. He is a cute little thing that is looking forward to having some fun in life. He's happy, playful and loving and good with the other dogs. He is on the shy side, probably hasn't had a very good like until now, but he will come around nicely. If there are kids they probably shouldn't be the screaming, running, kind just for his comfort. Ceelo tested heart worm postiive, has been treated and all aftercare if completed. He needs to be kept on heart worm preventative at least 6-9 months and then he should be tested again just to be sure he now tests negative. (Less)

We rescued Charlie from the shelter about 4 years ago; he was abused and had very high anxiety levels. We did 6 months of obedience training with an instructor, and he listens now. However, we have a newborn in the house, and Charlie is not adjusting well. He needs a LOT of attention. Will also need a fenced in yard where he can run (6 foot fence, he'll jump over anything less than that). Unfortunately the newborn comes first, and we'd like to find a good home for Charlie before the baby starts crawling. He's very sweet, and is happiest when he's cuddling with someone.
